Show the math

We find the smallest standard round-tier combination whose yield covers your guest count at the chosen slice size, adding up each tier's servings from Wilton's serving chart (two-layer tiers, 4 inches high):

tier combo serves = Σ servings of each tier ≥ guests

Per tier, wedding | party servings: 6″ 12 | 12, 8″ 24 | 20, 9″ 32 | 24, 10″ 38 | 28, 12″ 56 | 40, 14″ 78 | 63, 16″ 100 | 77. Wedding slices are about 1×2 inches and party slices about 1½×2 inches. A 12×18-inch sheet cake serves 98 at wedding slices or 72 at party slices.

Serving charts are a guide; a cake cut differently serves a different number. Everything is calculated in your browser.

What this does

A cake size calculator finds the smallest standard tier combination that serves your guest count at wedding or party slice sizes, plus the equivalent number of 12×18-inch sheet cakes.

How to use it

  1. Enter your guest count.
  2. Choose wedding or party slices.
  3. Read the smallest tier combo.
  4. See the sheet-cake equivalent.

How it works

Each tier’s servings come from Wilton’s serving chart: wedding slices are about 1×2 inches and party slices about 1½×2 inches, so a 12-inch tier serves 56 at a wedding but 40 at a party. A 12×18-inch sheet serves 98 wedding or 72 party slices.

Understanding your result

Serving count depends entirely on slice size, so a cake feeds roughly a quarter fewer at party slices than at slim wedding slices, plan to the style you will actually cut. A plain sheet cake kept in the kitchen is a cheap way to stretch servings without enlarging the display tiers, which are chosen for looks as much as for portions.

Example

120 guests at wedding slices fit a 6" + 10" + 14" 3-tier cake (128 servings), or two 12×18-inch sheet cakes (98 servings each).

Frequently asked questions

What size cake do I need?

Match your guest count to a tier combination's serving yield. We pick the smallest standard combo that covers everyone at your chosen slice size.

What is the difference between wedding and party slices?

Wedding slices are about 1×2 inches; party slices are about 1½×2 inches, so the same cake serves fewer people, for example 56 versus 40 from a 12-inch tier.

How many servings is a sheet cake?

A 12×18-inch sheet, two layers high, serves about 98 wedding-size or 72 party-size slices, which is why it is an economical alternative to extra tiers.
