How it counts

Characters include spaces, emoji and line breaks. For X the count follows X's published weighting: most Latin letters, digits and punctuation count 1, while emoji, CJK and other characters count 2, and every link starting with http://, https:// or www. counts as 23. TikTok's limit is counted in UTF-16 units, as its developer documentation describes, so some emoji count 2. Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube don't publish their exact method, so their count is Unicode characters, and a post heavy in emoji may tally slightly differently in the app.

Words are runs separated by whitespace; hashtags start with # and mentions with @.

A negative "remaining" means you're over the platform's limit and the post will be cut off or rejected. Nothing you type is sent anywhere, it's all counted in your browser.

What this does

A caption character counter counts characters, words, lines, hashtags, and mentions in your caption, and shows how many characters remain against each platform’s limit.

How to use it

  1. Paste or type your caption.
  2. Read the character and word counts.
  3. Pick a platform.
  4. See the characters remaining.

How it works

Everything counts toward the limit — letters, spaces, punctuation, emoji, and line breaks. For X it applies X’s published weighting: emoji and CJK characters count 2 and every link counts 23. Common limits: 280 for X, 2,200 for Instagram and TikTok, 3,000 for LinkedIn, 5,000 for a YouTube description.

Understanding your result

The remaining count tells you how much room each platform allows, but the more useful habit is front-loading: most feeds truncate with a More link, so put the hook and key words in the first sentence. Hashtags and mentions count toward the limit too, so trim them before they crowd out the message.

Example

A 250-character plain-text caption leaves 30 characters on X; add one emoji and a link and it leaves 5 (250 + 2 + 23 = 275).

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a character?

Everything you type counts toward the limit — letters, spaces, punctuation, emoji and line breaks. X publishes its rules, so the X count matches them (emoji and CJK count 2, links 23), and TikTok is counted in the UTF-16 units its developer docs use. Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube don’t publish an exact method, so for them the tool counts Unicode characters, and an emoji-heavy post may tally slightly differently in the app.

What are the platform limits?

Common limits include 280 characters for an X post, 2,200 for Instagram and TikTok captions, 3,000 for a LinkedIn post and 5,000 for a YouTube description. Pick one to see characters remaining.

Is my caption sent anywhere?

No. Everything is counted locally in your browser — nothing is uploaded.
