How typing speed is measured

This tool counts every five characters, spaces included, as one "word". Your gross speed is the characters you typed divided by five, per minute; net speed subtracts uncorrected mistakes.

net WPM = (characters ÷ 5 − errors) ÷ minutes

Accuracy is the share of the characters in your typed text that match the passage at the same position; a mistake you fix with backspace doesn't count against it. The timer starts the moment you type your first character and stops when you finish the passage. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.

What this does

A typing speed test measures your speed and accuracy on a short passage — net and gross words per minute, characters per minute, and error count in real time.

How to use it

  1. Start typing the passage.
  2. The timer starts on your first key.
  3. Type to the end.
  4. Read your net and gross WPM.

How it works

The tool counts every five characters you type, spaces included, as one word, so long and short words are scored the same way. Accuracy counts as much as raw speed.

gross WPM = (characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes; net subtracts errors

Understanding your result

Net WPM, which subtracts errors, is the number that matters, because raw speed with frequent mistakes is slower once you count the corrections. Compare your own results over time rather than against a single benchmark. If accuracy is low, slow down deliberately: clean technique raises your net speed faster than racing does.

Example

Typing 250 characters cleanly in a minute is about 50 WPM.

Frequently asked questions

How is WPM calculated?

The tool counts every five characters, spaces included, as one word. Gross WPM is the characters you typed divided by five, per minute; net WPM subtracts uncorrected errors, so accuracy matters.

What is a good typing speed?

It depends on what you need it for: if a job or course sets a speed, check its requirement and how it is measured. Track your net WPM, which already counts errors, and aim to improve it steadily; accuracy counts as much as raw speed.

When does the timer start?

It starts the moment you type your first character and stops when you complete the passage. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
