Hit Point Calculator
Estimate a character’s hit points by level from the hit die and Constitution modifier, the fixed-average, maximum and minimum totals. Calculates in your browser.
Average HP
-
Show the math
First level takes the maximum hit die. Each level after that uses the fixed average (⌊die/2⌋ + 1), and every level adds your Constitution modifier. A level never adds less than 1 hit point, even with a negative Constitution modifier.
HP = max die + CON + (level − 1) × max(1, avg die + CON)

What this does
A hit point calculator estimates a character’s hit points by level from the hit die and Constitution modifier — the fixed-average, maximum, and minimum totals.
How to use it
- Pick the hit die.
- Enter the level.
- Enter the Constitution modifier.
- Read the average, max, and min HP.
How it works
Level 1 takes the maximum die; each later level adds the fixed average of the die plus your Constitution modifier, and never less than 1 hit point.
HP = max die + Σ max(1, avg die + CON) per level
Understanding your result
The three figures bracket your luck: the fixed-average total is what most tables use for predictable progression, while the maximum and minimum show the range if you rolled each level instead. Level 1 always takes the full hit die, and the Constitution modifier applies every level, so a single point of Constitution compounds into a meaningful HP gap by high levels.
Example
A d8 class at level 5 with +2 CON averages about 38 HP.

Frequently asked questions
How are average hit points figured?
Level 1 takes the maximum die, and each later level adds the fixed average of the die plus your Constitution modifier.
What are the max and min figures?
They show the totals if every level rolled the highest or lowest possible result on the hit die.
Can a level add zero or negative hit points?
No. Each level after the first adds at least 1 hit point, even when a low Constitution modifier would push the roll to zero or below.
Is my data kept?
No. Everything is computed locally in your browser.
