Overland Travel Calculator
Work out how long a journey takes at slow, normal or fast pace, split into whole travel days plus leftover hours, using the fifth-edition travel pace table. Calculates in your browser.

Show the math
Paces follow the travel pace table of the fifth-edition rules (2014 System Reference Document 5.1; the 2024 SRD 5.2.1 keeps the same distances): an 8-hour travel day covers 18 miles slow, 24 normal or 30 fast, and an hour covers 2, 3 or 4 miles.
miles per day = day distance (8 h) + extra hours × hour distance
days = distance ÷ miles per day
leftover hours = leftover miles ÷ (miles per day ÷ hours per day)
Days longer than 8 hours are a forced march: each extra hour adds the hourly distance, and the rules call for a Constitution save against exhaustion. Shorter days cover the day distance pro rata.

What this does
An overland travel calculator works out how long a journey takes at slow, normal, or fast pace, split into whole travel days plus leftover hours.
How to use it
- Enter the distance.
- Pick a travel pace.
- Set the hours per day.
- Read the days and hours.
How it works
The fifth-edition travel pace table (SRD 5.1, same distances in SRD 5.2.1) sets an eight-hour day at 18 miles slow, 24 normal, or 30 fast. Each hour past eight is a forced march that adds the hourly distance (2, 3 or 4 miles); shorter days cover the day distance pro rata.
days = distance ÷ miles per day
Understanding your result
The travel days plus leftover hours assume a standard eight-hour day at your chosen pace, with the trade being that a fast pace covers ground but penalizes perception and a slow pace allows stealth. Set custom hours to model a forced march, but remember that pushing beyond eight hours risks exhaustion, so the fastest route on paper is not always the wisest.
Example
A 72-mile trip at normal pace takes 3 travel days.

Frequently asked questions
How far is a travel day?
A standard eight-hour day of travel covers 18 miles slow, 24 normal, or 30 fast, straight from the travel pace table.
Can I change the hours per day?
Yes. Each hour beyond eight adds the hourly distance for your pace (2, 3 or 4 miles) and, under the rules, risks exhaustion; a shorter day covers a proportional share of the day distance.
Is my data kept?
No. Everything is computed locally in your browser.
